Mechanical Engineering graduate student Xiang Yang and Rajat Mittal, an IDIES affiliate and mechanical engineering professor in the university’s Whiting School of Engineering, revamped the 169-year-old math strategy called the Jacobi iterative method and made it work up to 200 times faster.
The result of this could speed up the performance of computer simulations used in aerospace design, shipbuilding, weather and climate modeling, biomechanics and other engineering tasks.
