Steven Salzberg, Associate Director of IDIES, is one of four Bloomberg Distinguished Professors.
Steven Salzberg has been honored with the prestigious endowed Bloomberg Distinguished Professorship. He shares this honor with IDIES Director Alex Szalay and professors Arturo Casadevall and Christopher Chute. The professorships were established with a landmark gift by alumnus Michael R. Bloomberg, the goal of which is to bring together a group of 50 extraordinary cross-disciplinary scholars, empower them to serve as human bridges between our divisions, and entrust them with training future scholars, who will bring a depth and breadth of knowledge across disciplines to the pursuit of groundbreaking ideas.
Steven Salzberg’s work at the convergence of computer science and biology will help doctors customize patient treatment by giving them tools to connect and translate huge sets of data. As director of the university’s Center for Computational Biology, he leads a group whose research focuses on developing new methods and software for analyzing DNA and RNA sequences, not only in laboratory studies, but also while diagnosing individuals. Steven started out as a professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, but his curiosity led him to work on some of the first genomes to be sequenced, including with the Human Genome Project. He has appointments on the faculties of the School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Whiting School of Engineering.
